A huge part of my job involves reading and interpreting body language. While it is very uncommon for me to flat out call someone a liar, there are times that I’ve had to say things like, “That didn’t seem genuine” or “Can you give me a little more clarity? I think I missed some major details.”
We’ve all been lied to or may have even told a lie a time or two. However, there is a culture of people who lie for a living. Their personalities can’t survive without it and we come in contact with them more often than we realize.
To provide insight on how this presents itself, here are 10 signs someone may be lying to you:
1. They look away or off to the side when being asked a question.
2. They have distinct eyebrow and rapid eye movement. Eyebrows may move up and down, or become “scrunched.” Eyelids may blink a lot and eyes may lose contact.
3. They volunteer irrelevant, random information.
4. They often laugh before they provide an answer to a question. (Could be nervousness but it also masks truth)
5. There is constant fidgeting, tapping or body movement.
6. They often “ghost” or disappear from interaction.
7. There is deflection (changing the subject to focus away from the topic at hand)
8. They take the complete position of a victim and swear unawareness (don’t know anything; don’t know how it started, don’t know why they were chosen or why they’re apart of anything)
9. They proclaim to be the most honest and “realest” person. They may even offer to show you their phone or communication devices. This is a huge sign they’re hiding something.
10. There is very little follow through or action behind their promises.
This post was written to give insight to misleading behaviors. While there are exceptions to every behavior, these signs are more common and align with dishonesty and/or being mislead.
